8 Bowling Rules That You MUST Follow in A Bowling Alley

Bowling brings with it many fond memories. Nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment when that ball curl knocks down all ten pins. However, bowling alley frequenters will agree when we say, the perfect hook comes with patience, practice, and a little bit of scouring the web.

Are you ready for the most epic ball hook of your life? Let’s break it down.

What Is The Goal?

The goal of bowling is fairly simple. The one who knocks down most pins takes home the title. Every pin knocked down adds to your score chart. If you clear all pins in one shot, you get a ‘strike’. If you clear all pins in one turn, you get a ‘spare’. One game has 12 opportunities to get a strike and a maximum of 300 points to be earned.

What Are The Important Rules of Bowling?

  • 10 Frames For Each Game

A bowling game consists of 10 frames. Each frame refers to a bowler’s turn which can have up to two rolls. In the tenth frame, however, a bowler may get three rolls but it depends on how well they have been playing. The frames are important since, unlike many other sports, bowling doesn’t follow a game clock.

  • Do Not Cross the Bowling Foul Line

When rolling your ball, always make sure to release it from behind the foul line. If you cross the foul line or even barely nudge it with your foot, your roll will not be counted, and instead recorded as bowling a zero.

  • The Ball Should Not Bounce Back From The Gutter

Sometimes, the ball bounces back from the gutter to knock some of the leftover pins. This is actually against the rules. Once the ball drops in the gutter, it is considered to be out of bounds and thus any pins knocked over are not counted in the tally.

  • Do Not Alter The Ball Mid-match

If you wish to modify the ball such that it spins better, be done with your alterations before the match starts. Some people use rosin powder and other substances to make their roll better but most tournaments condone this as cheating.

  • Maximum scorable points in 300

A perfect bowling match is when the players score a strike in the first nine frames along with three strikes in the tenth frame (ie. 12 perfect strikes). The rules of bowling state that no bowler can score above 300 points.

  • Two Balls for The First Nine Frames (And Three for the Tenth)

A bowler gets a maximum of two rolls per frame. If the first roll is a strike, well and good, if not you get a second attempt. For the tenth and final frame, the bowler can get up to three rolls, given that the first two are strikes or combine for a spare.

  • Bowling Shoes Are A Must

Regular sneakers ruin the wooden bowling lane; thus, it is essential that one wears bowling shoes. You can either bring your own or simply rent a pair from the bowling alley.

  • Let The Bowler on Your Right Go First

Bowling etiquette states that if two bowlers are waking up to the lane at the same time, the one on the right goes first. This prevents distractions and keeps the bowler from having to rush to finish their turn.
